French VFX pay and AI rules are contested, while ILM spreads work across three sites

French animation and VFX workers are pressing on pay, job titles and generative AI rules, which could shape costs and contract terms on shared European bids. Show breakdowns also show who is winning work and how it is split across sites. Worth watching: the 18 November walkout.

Labour action in France

The SNTPCT union has called a two-hour walkout of French animation and VFX workers, which could signal rising labour tension in the sector and is worth watching. If employers concede, French cost bases and AI clauses may shift. Worth watching for anyone pricing co-productions or subcontracting to French studios.

Pipeline tools

A Foundry video covers Katana, Nuke and USD use on Toy Story 5. It is a pointer to how a large studio builds its pipeline around USD.

ILM's dinosaur work

ILM delivered around 700 shots across Sydney, San Francisco and Vancouver, with environments in Sydney and previs, postvis and creatures elsewhere. That split suggests how large work is divided by site specialism. Useful reference when pitching environment-heavy or creature-heavy packages.

Who did the work on recent shows

Union VFX took 234 shots on a mid-scale A24 and StudioCanal film, mostly environments, set extensions and practical-plus-digital effects. Both help gauge where mid-size studios compete.
